Short description:

Urban water management poses a huge challenge for countries, municipalities, authorities, cities and the population. That implies, one deal always with a network of a complex course of actions, which requires the co-operation between science and practice. Therefore, the goal is to illustrate these coherences. The Seminar is about the construction, operation and maintenance of water supply and sewer systems. Water sources are generally not located where the major water demand exist. Thus, reliable drinking water supply systems are needed. Usually, this happens with a pipeline system that transport water from a water purification plant to the final consumer (households, industry, and agriculture). Are water supply networks in a bad condition and paralleled by water losses, the meaning of a prior made technically water purification can be questioned. Water losses in double figures in areas with limited resources require engineering measures in order to improve the supply situation both qualitatively and quantitatively. Affected are both, the urban metropolises and the rural areas. In addition to drinking water supply the wastewater discharge is crucial in improving the sanitary situation. A reliable transport of domestic and industrial wastewater to a waste water treatment plant serves to protect the environment. Moreover, the spread of infectious diseases is prevented. Thus, the avoidance of exfiltration of wastewater by dense sewer systems is essential.

With the insight into dimensioning, operation and construction of the different systems the possibility of transferability to the countries of origin can be evaluated and a decision finding process can be brought about by multi criteria points of view (economy, technology, sustain-ability). In order to find the standard which provides mandatory guidelines for the implementation of measures and simultaneously does not misjudge the regional varying specifications. In addition it is important, to incorporate the particular activities in an overall plan (master plan): to identify deficiencies; to address concrete objectives and to initiate and coordinate appropriate measures to target achievement. The Alumni will be strengthened to support education and training in schools, universities and adult education but also to motivate themselves and others to become active and to form networks. Furthermore, it is intended to make contact with specialist com-panies before visiting IFAT through the integration of companies and the technical discussion in the Seminar program. This contact can then be intensified in the framework of IFAT.
