FE-Applications in Geotechnical Engineering

Brief description

The module FE-Applications in Geotechnical Engineering is an elective module in the Master's degree programme. It is particularly suitable in the specialisation areas of structural engineering and water and environment, but also in the area of transport and road engineering. The module builds on the knowledge acquired in the Bachelor's degree programme, especially from the compulsory modules Engineering Geology & Soil Mechanics and Geotechnics I. It is also advantageous to have taken the module Foundation Engineering and Special foundation construction (Master's programme) beforehand in order to be familiar with more complex geotechnical systems and their load-bearing behaviour. In the module FE-Applications in Geotechnical Engineering, the deformation and strength behaviour of soils is examined in depth. Based on the material behaviour in so-called soil mechanical element tests such as the triaxial test, the students learn selected soil mechanical material laws and the determination of the associated material parameters. Using the FE programme PLAXIS 3D, they are then introduced to the fundamentals of numerical modelling and the application to geotechnical problems on the basis of selected problems.

course content

•   mechanical description of stress state, typical stress-deformation behaviour of soils

•   Structure and formulation of simple and selected higher-order material laws of soil mechanics

•   Basics of numerical modelling such as system definition, boundary conditions, components and mesh generation, calibration of the material models, validation of the numerical model, evaluation and interpretation of the results

•   Introduction to the FE program PLAXIS 3D and application to selected problems

•   Independent work-out of a project task in small groups
