Rock Mechanics, Rock and Tunnel Construction

 

Rock mechanics is the sub-discipline of Geotechnical Engineering which, in contrast to soil mechanics, deals with the behaviour of solid rocks. Its practical application is mainly cavity and rock construction. This module deals with the basics of rock mechanics, rock construction and especially tunnelling.

•   Discontinuities and their structure, measurement and representation, stability considerations 

•   Rock construction methods, especially slope stabilisation, construction in karst areas

•   Tunneling methods, bracing types

•   Stress states, tunnel statistics and basic design principles
