Geotechnical Aspects in Water and Evironment

Brief Description

The module Geotechnical Aspects in Water and Environment in the Master's degree programme in Civil Engineering is a compulsory module in the specialisation Water and Environment. It is also suitable as an elective module in the specialisation field of structural engineering but also in the field of traffic and road engineering. Building on the knowledge acquired in the Bachelor's degree programme from the compulsory modules Engineering Geology and Soil Mechanics and Geotechnics I, students learn in this module about various geotechnical issues at the interface of water and the environment. These may include foundation aspects of hydraulic engineering structures in the field of traffic hydraulic engineering or flood protection, but also of structures for the generation of renewable energy such as offshore wind and wave energy plants. In the associated seminar-like course technical input will be provided whereas selected topics are worked out in small teams, and later on presented and discussed in the group.

course content

• Structures in and on the water, e.g. foundations for onshore/offshore wind turbines, river and sea dikes, dams, quay walls

• Environmental effects and resultant actions on the ground and on geotechnical structures, principles of loading determination

• Methods of ground investigation on and in the water

• Load-bearing behaviour under monotonic and transient loading, basics of design and design methods

• Special manufacturing and installation methods
